The immediate reaction of German POWs upon being forced by the US Army to watch to the uncensored footage of the concentration camps shot by the US Signal Corps.

People often forget that most of the German troops had no idea about what was going on, they weren’t all fanatic Nazis bent on genocide, they were just regular soldiers who answered the call when their country went to war.

Not all enemies are as ugly as the crimes they commit. 

I was unaware of this. Damn.

Artist Art Venti likes to experiment with shadow, light and depth in an environment that starts with a forest of tissues in a light box. The view in this box of translucent paper suggests landscape scenes that seem to move and change as the sun crosses the sky. If the inferred panorama is beguiling enough, the mind will move from the seen to the unseen and finally to what can only be a dream. Sketches of these moments are assembled and used as an elementary scaffold to begin what becomes elaborately constructed worlds drawn in color pencil. When they are complete, the observer will have an opportunity to travel through random meaning to find his own personal significance.

Read this Village Voice cover story this morning and got my life + became a fan. Specifically here:

“Quattlebaum says he hates … the field of queer studies along with it. ‘I have a lot of problems with the academic queer community because it’s a community that exists completely removed from reality,’ he says. ‘Those kids who are selling their bodies on the West Side Highway, on Christopher Street, they don’t even know what the fuck queer theory is.’”

Hence our need to be rooted in grassroots, in the streets, in solidarity with those who are “marginalized.” I’m done with folks and organizations speaking our names and bodies in theory, in death, in stats. Yet ignoring the same folks they discuss in theory without ever knowing us, without ever trying to engage, without ever “outreaching,” without ever lending the stage and resources to us. 

As a trans woman of color - no matter what space I enter - I have one stilletoed foot on the street. Always.
